Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity

I have extensive experience and training to support neurodivergent folks, whether or not they have diagnoses of Attention-deficient/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  My approach to neurodivergence is rooted in experience with previous and current clients who like the different ways their minds work, and my view is that neurodivergence itself is often pathologized mainly due to most of the population having brains that work in a certain way, rather than neurodivergence being a problem in itself.  That being said, moving through the world as a neurodivergent person can be daunting, as the environment we live in has been designed for how the majority thinks and behaves.

Therapy for the way your mind works

Clients may struggle with focus and organization, or hyper-focus, or an abundance of physical or mental energy that makes them restless, or difficulty with social cues, or challenges with being understood.  Neurodivergent women may express differently than men, and trans* folk often find that neurodivergence and gender identity concerns walk together: there is an evolving view that the development of neurodivergence is not only biological in nature, but also heavily influenced by trauma, and this aligns with the experiences of many trans* people.

Therapy that works with your strengths

In our work together, I draw from an eclectic range of approaches, including organizational coaching tailored to your times of best focus, relational work to help your navigate challenges in relationships (especially with neurotypical people), and exploration of neurodivergence as potentially unique and beneficial rather than a deficit.  My work often moves in tandem with external medical support such as medication to help improve focus, which many but not all clients find helpful.

Here when you’re ready

Neurodivergence makes you unique, and can have benefits, but may pose challenges for you, or you may have been framed as challenging by neurotypical folk around you.  I work from a strengths-based perspective, and I acknowledge and support my neurodivergent clients in their struggles, especially as it can take a lot of effort to move through a world that feels like it’s designed for everyone but you.

I will help you explore your concerns in a confidential, safe, affirming and anti-oppressive environment where we take into account all aspects of your life, including your relationships, culture, family, and spirituality.
